Alaska State Census Records

Purchased in 1867, Alaska's earliest surviving census that includes a majority of the territory is for the year 1900. Censuses were taken every ten years, and are available through 1920. All but the 1910 are indexed. Censuses prior to 1900 are sporadic and fragmented, though exist for a variety of areas. Consult:

Jackson, Ronald Vern. Alaska Census Records, 1870-1907. Bountiful, UT: Accelerated Indexing Systems, 1976.

NARA's Pacific Alaska Region in Anchorage has more than 9,000 cubic feet of archival holdings, including textual documents, photographs, maps, and architectural drawings dating from about 1867 to the present. The records were created or received by federal courts and over thirty federal agencies in Alaska. Anchorage is the newest NARA facility and holds numerous cases relating to fishing, land title, and other treaty rights of Indian tribes, and generally reflects the history of the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, dating back to the territorial courts.
