Dublin plays host to some major sporting events every year. These events attract supporters from home and abroad as well as Dublin people.
These events are of great financial benefit to Dublin Hotels and Bed and Breakfast in Dublin.
The Gaelic Athletic Association hosts numerous games of Hurling and Football in its main Dublin Stadium, Croke Park. The GAA Football & Hurling Finals which happen in September of each year attract more than 80,000 supporters each and the semi finals also attract almost as many fans.
Numerous lesser games throughout the year attract large numbers of fans.
Of course not all fans stay overnight in Dublin but quite a good number stay from one night to a week and these are very welcome customers for the hospitality sector.
Croke Park is a state of the art stadium which was completely redeveloped recently and for the past three or four years it has been a very suitable venue for International Rugby and Soccer games.
These were previously played at Lansdowne Road in Ballsbridge but that stadium was being rebuilt over the past three years and so by agreement with the GAA the games were played at Croke Park. Sadly for the GAA, this profitable arrangement has come to an end because the rebuilding of Lansdowne Road has been completed and it has emerged as a fantastic new facility called The Aviva Stadium. Rugby and Soccer Internationals will be held at The Aviva from now on.
Another great international sporting event is the Dublin Horse Show which happens in the RDS in Dublin every August. This event is over five days which goes from 4th August to 8th August this year (2010). The Dublin Horse Show is ranked among the world’s foremost show jumping meetings and attracts many of the leading international riders. There are as many as twenty events each day. The most famous event is probably The Nations’ Cup which is an International Team Competition for which the Aga Khan Trophy is the prize.
This is a much coveted trophy and the competition is very intense.
There are also numerous other interesting features which will be of interest to the whole family, young and old. This year there will be great interest in a demonstration by Monty Roberts (The Horse Whisperer).
Some other popular Dublin sports:
1) Golf (Royal Dublin and Portmarnock are the most famous courses in Dublin and the K-Club and Druids Glen are only a short drive away).
2) Horse Racing at Leopardstown with Naas Racecourse, The Curragh, Fairyhouse and Punchestown nearby.
3) Greyhound Racing tracks at Harold’s Cross and Shelbourne Park.
4) Sailing in Dublin Harbour and Dun Laoire.
5) International Boxing at The National Stadium and The RDS.
