There are two different categories of getting your car cleaned. The first method is to take it to a car wash. The second, more expensive method has come to be known as auto detailing. Auto detail shops have sprung up everywhere to address people’s desires to have their cars cleaned to a much higher level. Drive by any auto detail shop and you are likely to see some really new expensive cars being lovingly cleaned and primped.

The traditional car wash can be found along every main shopping street in any town or city. Sometimes you’ll find two or three of them in a mile long stretch. There are many different variations of car wash out there but the general idea is the same. You drive in at one end with a dirty car and a minute or two later you drive out on the other end with a clean car, the exterior that is. Most car washes have several self serve vacuums that you can use to clean out the interior of your car or you will have the option of having the car wash staff vacuum your car before it goes through the wash. Inside the length of the wash there are brushes and long sponge like strips that soap up your car and loosen dirt before the car comes to the last phase and is rinsed.

With auto detailing, everything is done by hand separately for each car, not on a conveyor belt. The exterior is hand washed and waxed with a premium auto wax. The interior is cleaned with a fine tooth comb so to speak. Every single nook and cranny is reached so that the car will basically look new. There is nothing stopping you from taking a few hours on a Saturday and doing all of this yourself, if that’s what you’re into. You can wash the exterior and clean the wheels with a gas powered pressure washer that can remove the brake dust. After drying the car with a chamois cloth you can apply the wax and then remove it later with a special cloth that you can buy at an auto parts discount store. If you are really fanatical about the look of your high end rims you can loosen the lug nuts and actually clean whatever dirt is stuck in the groove. Then you’ll need to retighten the lug nuts but don’t over tighten them. You don’t need to utilize a Snap-on torque wrench to tighten them to exact standards, just don’t use too much force or you will risk stripping them.

When you get to the interior of the car you first want to remove the mats and any other loose items before thoroughly vacuuming the carpet and seats. Scrub the mats with soap and rinse them before letting them air dry for several hours. Go over every part of the dashboard, including controls and air vents, with a clean cloth and some window cleaner to remove all dust.
