Michigan State Census Records

Federal censuses in Michigan began in 1820, and were taken every ten years after that. They are available for research through 1920, with the exceptions of 1890. The 1820 census includes only the seven counties of Brown, Crawford, Macomb, Michilimackinack, Monroe, Oakland and Wayne. All censuses are indexed in print or soundex format.
Numerous state and territorial censuses were taken in Michigan, although few are extant. One source discussing the state censuses more comprehensively is:
Lainhart, Ann S. State Census Records. Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing, 1992.
Microfilm copies of the state census schedules for 1845, 1854, 1864, 1874, 1884, and 1894 are held by the State Archives of Michigan. Prior to 1884 the state census names only the head of the household. The 1884 census, however, will identify those in each household that have married within the census year, giving the month of and the location of the marriage.
