Minnesota State Census Records

Federal Censuses began in 1850, though statehood was not achieved for another eight years. They were taken every ten years, and are available through 1920, with the exceptions of 1890.
State censuses offer additional enumerations for 1857, 1865, 1875, 1885, 1895, and 1905. Each state census includes all members of the household, though information does vary with each census.
Territorial periods also provided censuses for the present-day state of Minnesota. The 1820 census for the Michigan Territory and the 1836 census for the Iowa Territory should be consulted for these earlier times. As well, the 1840 census for St. Croix County, Wisconsin includes those inhabitants east of the Mississippi River in Wisconsin. The 1840 census of Clayton County, Iowa enumerated those west of the river.
